Okezie Ikpeazu, Abia State Governor, has warned politicians in the state to allow him to concentrate on governance and stop disturbing him about their 2023 ambitions.

The Governor in a statement on Friday through his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Onyebuchi Ememanka noted that some politicians and political groups have started bickering about who will succeed him in 2023.

He described their agitations as premature, urging them to join him in building the state while the people are left alone to decide who will govern the next.

Ikpeazu added that the 2023 governorship aspirants must understand that he remains firmly in charge of the affairs of the state and his successor will emerge through the right process when the time is right.

“If I start in June 2021 to think about my successor in 2023 and begin to hold meetings on the issue, it will be difficult for me to concentrate again and do my work,” he stated.

Ikpeazu further appealed to politicians “not to allow their rhetorics about 2023 to threaten the peace and tranquillity we currently enjoy in Abia State.”

In the meantime, the Governor said his preoccupation was to continue to deliver more people-oriented infrastructural projects for the people of Abia State, strengthen trade and commerce and keep our people safe, noting that the question of who succeeds him is definitely not what he is thinking about at the moment.

Meanwhile, Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara is set to end months of speculations and formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
