Buhari Pledges To Reward Cameroon For Its Support To Nigeria During Civil War

Mr Buhari pledges his government’s support for the stability of Cameroon because the Central African country helped Nigeria during the civil war.

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday said his regime will help sit tight President Paul Biya Cameroon quash secessionists agitation because Cameroon supported Nigerian during the civil war.

Mr Biya has been ruling Cameroon since 1982.

Nigerian civil war which lasted between 1966-70, led to the death of over three million Igbo civilians, many of them rounded up and shot at close range or starved to death.

Mr Buhari, in a statement by his spokesperson Femi Adesina, made this pledge against the backdrop of threats by secessionists from English speaking region of Cameroon who have continued to agitate for Ambazonian nation.

Mr Buhari, who met with Felix Mbayu, a Special Envoy from Mr Biya, said “Nigeria will offer the best support possible to ensure that the Republic of Cameroon remains an indivisible country,” because Cameroon provided support for Nigeria during the civil war.

Saying Nigeria is acutely aware of the separatist agitation by the Ambazonian movement, Mr Buhari submitted that it was in the interest of Nigeria “to ensure that Cameroon is stable, and we will be steadfast in our support for you,” the statement party read.

According to the statement, Mr Buhari further said Nigeria will be support Cameroon against secessionists because the country supported Nigeria during the civil war.

“That was why when I first came to office in 2015, I immediately visited all our neighbours, because we are very clear about the value of good neighbourliness.

“You will have problems if your neighbours are not cultivated. And our relationship with Cameroon had been very clear since when I was serving in the military. The country offered us needed support during our Civil War,” Mr Buhari said.
