Apex Banks Under Fire Over Hide And Seek

Some ‘heavy weight’ banks are now under serious criticism by the Committee of Customs and Excise of the Federal House of Representatives for their deliberate avoidance in the ongoing investigation of the revenues collected by the banks on behalf of the Nigeria Customs Service.

Representatives from top Banks like Zenith Bank, Citi bank, Keystone Bank, FCMB among others were shown the door by the Chairman of the Committee for their lack of capacity. However, Eco bank, UBA , Polaris and Wema were allowed to make their presentation before the Committee on Wednesday 13th October 2021.

The Green Chamber demoan that the listed Banks deliberately send in incapable representatives in order to waste the time of the Committee of which they have made it clear that it is absolutely unacceptable. Hence, the affected Banks have been given an ultimatum of a fortnight to reconcile their accounts and failure to do that will incur action against the banks.

On a final note, Abejide threatened to direct to the Apex Bank, CBN, to deduct the money from source and discontinue the collection of the Custom duties for the Government by the defaulting banks.
