Nnewi: Nonso Smart Okafor Calls For The Compensation Of Victims Of Okpunoegbu Market Inferno

The member representing Nnewi North in Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor, has called for the adequate compensation of victims of Umuisiedo Okpunoegbu Umudim-Nnewi, Market.

The lawmaker appealed a motion on the floor of Anambra State House of Assembly, calling on the Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, to provide adequate compensation to the victims of the fire disaster at Umuisiedo Okpunoegbu Umudim-Nnewi, Market.

Rising under Matter of Urgent Public Importance, the lawmaker noted that Umuisiedo Okpunoegbu Market which is one of the busiest foodstuff markets in Nnewi, and mostly dominated by women was razed down by fire on Sunday, 1st January, 2022, destroying goods worth millions of Naira belonging to traders within the market.

According to him, during his visit to the market, he learnt that the fire which started around 9pm on 1st January, burnt over hundred shops (shanties) and food items before the intervention of the fire service.

While moving the motion, he also stated that since after the tragic incident, many traders and families have been incapacitated and rendered indigent since their main sources of livelihood has been wiped away as a result of the fire disaster.

Calling on the Governor to provide adequate compensation for the traders, the lawmaker revealed that although he has written to the Governor about the fire disaster, his motion is to use the state legislature to call the attention of the Governor once again.

He said that the inferno has created a humanitarian situation for those affected by the fire, hence the need for government to intervene and support them financially to ease their pains.

The former youth leader also raised the need for the government to begin discussion with operators and leaders of the market on the possibility of building a modern market in the area.
