Before taking further action, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, has decided to go on a one-month warning strike to see if the federal government would answer its demands.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the decision was made following extensive discussions between the academic union and the National Executive Council, or NEC.

This news outlet previously reported that ASUU began a two-day meeting on Saturday to consider whether or not to engage in another strike.

The conference, which was due to end on Sunday, was instead extended into the early hours of Monday, prompting the academic union to declare a warning strike in order to force the administration to accept its requests.

The strike, according to a source at the meeting in Lagos who verified the event to newsmen on Monday morning, is to allow the Federal Government to undertake the necessary work, failing which the union would proceed on an indefinite strike.

“All we want to do is offer the government a long rope in the hopes that it would understand the need of avoiding a complete shutdown of academic activity in the country’s institutions.”

We are also parents with children in the system, but we cannot stand by and watch as the country’s educational system crumbles,” the source told Newsmen.

He added: “Our agitation is in the interest of all and if the system is made better, we will all enjoy it. Prominent personalities in the country have waded into the matter but the government seems recalcitrant. Our National President would explain more when he briefs the press later today.”

Anaedoonline.ng understands that ASUU’s demands from President Muhammadu Buhari-led government include the payment of Earned Academic Allowance, revitalization fund, the replacement of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System, IPPIS, with the University Transparency and Accountability System UTAS, among others.
