Nigerian governors’ wives have disputed claims that they traveled to Dubai to surprise the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, with a birthday cake.

Mrs Buhari was surprised with a birthday cake by a group of Nigerian governors’ wives who paid her a visit in Dubai, according to Anaedoonline.ng.

The delegation was in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to congratulate the first lady, who turned 51 on February 17th, 2022.

The visit provoked controversy, particularly on social media, shortly after the footage was released, with Nigerians criticizing the first women for their acts.

The Chairlady of the Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum, Bisi Fayemi, stated in a statement on Wednesday that the governors’ wives were on an official visit to Dubai and would not be presenting Mrs Buhari with a birthday cake.

The governor’s wives decided to surprise the first lady with a cake because the visit coincided with her birthday, according to Mrs Fayemi.

“Our attention has been attracted to a social media post made on the 1st of March 2022 stating that certain Nigerian governors’ wives were in Dubai to surprise Nigeria’s First Lady, Dr. Aisha Buhari, on the occasion of her birthday on the 17th of February 2022,” she stated.

“The Nigerian Governors Wives were in the entourage of the First Lady of Nigeria, who was on an official trip to the UAE, for the avoidance of doubt and in the interest of the public.”

“The trip included visits to Dubai Expo 2020, tours of the Dubai e-learning center, meetings with foundations and agencies in the UAE interested in investing in education, health, and technology in Africa, with a focus on women and young people, and meetings with foundations and agencies in the UAE who are interested in investing in education, health, and technology in Africa, with a focus on women and young people.”

“The tour coincided with Her Excellency, Aisha Buhari’s birthday,” she continued. On her birthday, February 17, a delegation of Governors’ Wives paid her a special visit and presented her with a cake and flowers. After the brief presentation, we proceeded to attend the scheduled meetings for the day.”

The wife of the Governor of Ekiti State stated that they were shocked to see misinterpreted news of the video that surfaced online.

She said, “We were therefore dismayed to see footage of the visit interpreted as to mean Governors’ Wives left Nigeria for the sole of celebrating HE’s birthday.

“This is not true and we find this assumption scandalous. We are all dedicated to supporting our spouses as well as our First Lady, and we would never be a party to anything that will bring embarrassment to them and ourselves.

“Our key learnings from our visits to the various agencies in Dubai and the briefings we received points to the need for Nigeria to scale up investments in education, science and technology and provide more opportunities for young people, who are the key to the future. We will continue to address these issues in our own work as well as advocate for increased commitments in these areas from our leaders.”
