IPOB, the Indigenous People of Biafra, has advised Southern politicians to quit pressing the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, the group’s leader.

IPOB claims that asking the Federal Government makes Kanu appear guilty when he hasn’t done anything wrong.

IPOB’s spokeswoman, Emma Powerful, was responding to the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum’s (SMBLF) plea for Kanu’s release.

With Kanu’s ongoing arrest, the SMBLF accused the Federal Government of brazenly demonstrating double standards.

Kanu’s incarceration and prosecution, according to the organization, were provocative, while Boko Haram terrorists were accorded VIP treatment.

Powerful, in response, stated that the IPOB leader had committed no crime worthy of his extended incarceration.

Powerful stated in a statement that the Nigerian government should drop all charges against Kanu.

“Leaders from the south should stop begging the FG to do what will save the country’s already battered image because no court can try or convict him on the basis of this flagrant violation of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s human rights, as well as the criminal violation of International humanitarian law and extant treaties prohibiting extraordinary rendition, it is impossible and can’t happen,” Powerful says.

“Begging the Federal Government may simply give the impression that he is guilty of an offence when he has committed none. The Federal Government should do the needful by either withdrawing the charges on or before 8th April, 2022.”
