Chelsea supporters must cease screaming “totally inappropriate” owner Roman Abramovich’s name, according to James Slack, a spokesperson for UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

During Chelsea’s 1-0 Premier League victory over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, fans once again demonstrated their support for Abramovich.

This comes after the UK government sanctioned Abramovich last week for suspected links to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The government seized Abramovich’s assets, and Chelsea was placed under a special license that permits the club to function but prevents it from generating new revenue.

Since purchasing Chelsea in 2003, the Russian billionaire has delivered the club tremendous success.

However, Boris Johnson’s official spokesman says that Chelsea fans should not be fooled by Abramovich’s ties to Putin, who is directing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“We understand the intensity of feelings around people’s clubs,” Slack said, “but that doesn’t justify behavior that is utterly wrong at this moment.”

“I believe that individuals may demonstrate their love and support for their team without resorting to such tactics.”

“We are open to the club being sold, and we would examine an application for a license to allow that to happen in the correct circumstances,” he continued.

“But it’s for Chelsea to determine the exact process. My understanding is potential buyers would approach the club, who would then need to apply for a further amended licence to facilitate the sale.

“As far as I am aware, that has not happened at this point.”
