Electoral Act Amendment: Malami Threatens FG Will Go To Court If…

AGF, Malami

There are signs that the Federal Government does not accept the National Assembly’s stance on President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent request to modify section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

According to Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the administration would consider all alternatives, including going to court or accepting the law as it is.

His comments came shortly after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo presided over a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday.

He explained that the administration has three alternatives, one of which is to encourage legislators to change their positions, as well as to go to court or to accept the law as it is.

Malami further stated that while it is the role of legislators to enact legislation, the Federal Government will use all available tools if it becomes necessary.

He claimed that the administration has yet to take a firm stance on what it would do about the situation.

Malami also commented on the US government’s extradition request for DCP Abba Kyari, stating that the matter has created unnecessary debates and that the case is still being handled.
