According to spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, Guterres and Putin discussed “humanitarian assistance and civilian evacuation from war zones, particularly in respect to the situation in Mariupol.”

The evacuation of civilians from the Azovstal steel plant is planned to involve the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

There will be further talks between the UN Humanitarian Office and the Russian Defense Ministry.

Guterres expressed opposition to Russia’s military action in Ukraine and raised concerns about those trapped.
