Russia-Ukraine war: Agreement Between UN Chief Guterres, Putin Emerge

The UN has released the agreement agreed by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.

It was the international body’s first high-level meeting with Russia since the invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

The United Nations said that a packed steel mill in Mariupol will be evacuated.

According to spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, Guterres and Putin discussed “humanitarian assistance and civilian evacuation from war zones, particularly in respect to the situation in Mariupol.”

The evacuation of civilians from the Azovstal steel plant is planned to involve the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

There will be further talks between the UN Humanitarian Office and the Russian Defense Ministry.

Guterres expressed opposition to Russia’s military action in Ukraine and raised concerns about those trapped.

But Putin said Russian troops offered humanitarian assistance, adding that Ukrainian fighters were using civilians as shields.

Guterres is scheduled to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Thursday.
