The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reacted to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele’s rumored presidential ambitions.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, a group of farmers bought Emefiele’s presidential nomination and expression of interest papers from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a rapid reaction, the CBN Governor said that he had not made up his mind about running for president and that if he did, he would purchase the forms himself.

Emefiele, on the other hand, went to the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court to seek an interpretation of the constitution and public service norms regarding public officers pursuing elected posts while in office.

In response to the incident, INEC announced that it was closely monitoring reports around the CBN Governor’s presidential ambitions.

In a statement released on Monday, INEC Chairman Rotimi Oyekanmi’s spokesperson stated the commission will make a judgment on the topic shortly if Emefiele decides to run for president in 2023.

Oyekanmi also stated that the election commission may shift critical materials now held by the CBN.

The statement reads: “The strategic partnership between the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Independent National Electoral Commission which enables the commission to store its sensitive election materials with the CBN, has been in place for many years and beneficial in several ways.

“Indeed, there have been various reports that the CBN governor is nursing an intention to run for the office of President. But, he has yet to formally declare his intention to run for the office of president as of today.

“However, if and when he eventually does, the commission will look at the implications and take a decision on what becomes of the long-standing strategic partnership with the CBN.”
