The killing of a female student, Deborah Samuel of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, Sokoto State, has been strongly denounced by Afenifere, the pan Yoruba socio-political organization.

On Wednesday, May 11, 2022, the organization denounced the incident as “the unprovoked and unlawful killing of a girl student by her school mates for supposed blasphemy,” calling the conduct barbarous.

Throughout a statement, the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, noted that activities verging on religious intolerance have been occurring in the North, resulting in the loss of lives and property.

According to the statement, the activity occurs frequently in the region as a result of the state’s inability to take harsh measures against those who commit such acts.

Deborah’s death, according to the statement, should serve as a wake-up call to put an end to faith-based killings in the United States.

It praised Governor Aminu Tambuwal’s efforts in canceling his presidential campaign meeting in Abuja and going to Sokoto to deal with the crisis.

The organization urged authorities to move beyond platitudes and ensure that all those responsible for the heinous crime are brought to justice.

It also urged authorities to take quick action to prevent such occurrences from occurring in the future.

The group went on to say that no one can fight for God, and that the greatest thing to do is teach, evangelize, and spread the gospel, rather than compel or kill others to force them to accept one’s own faith.
