Biafra Day: South East Roads Deserted As Igbos Remember Their Fallen Heros

On Monday, the streets and highways of Enugu city were totally deserted as commercial and social activity were halted in the South-East to commemorate Biafra heroes and heroines.

Imo, Anambra, and Ebonyi states all have the same report.

Every year on May 30, pro-groups commemorate those who perished during the civil war between Biafra and Nigeria in the 1960s.

Update: Sit-at-home, Shops in Nnewi Deserted

Unfortunately, it fell on the same week when the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) launched a Monday sit-in in the fourth quarter of 2021 to put pressure on Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari to free their leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Since June 27, 2021, Kanu has been detained by the country’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS).

Newsmen on the ground in Enugu claimed that the T-Junction Flyover, Timber shed Market, National Open University, Trans Ekulu, Enugu, Roman Store Road, Nowas-Trans Ekulu Road, Abakpa Flyover, and T-Junction Road, among others, were virtually abandoned.

In Enugu, several government facilities, like as schools and ministries, were shuttered.

Major markets, banks, and retail malls were all shut down, resulting in a sit-at-home compliance rate of 80 to 90 percent.

Sit-At-Home: Owerri City Deserted, Commercial Activities Grounded

Meanwhile, minimal vehicular activity were observed on the periphery, with tricycles, minibuses, and private automobiles sighted on roads in Emene, Abakpa, and Amechi Awkunanu, among others.

However, in Imo State, particularly in Orlu town, the Nigerian military is said to be sieging the town.

Princewill Chimezie Richards, the leader of the Biafra Nations League (BNL), a pro-Biafra organisation, expressed strong opposition to ‘the extensive militarization of Orlu’ and large areas of the southeast region’ in a post.

In Anambra, compliance was likewise widely observed.

Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), a state-owned media organization, was torched by hoodlums earlier on Monday.
