Sani Mohammed, head coach of Nigeria’s U-21 men’s volleyball team, says the team’s goal is to finish first in their group after beating Gambia in the ongoing 2022 African U-21 Men’s Nation’s Volleyball Championship in Tunisia.

Following a 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-20) victory over Morocco in their first match of the tournament on Monday, the Nigeria U-21 volleyball team defeated Gambia 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-15) on Tuesday to record their second consecutive win in Tunisia.

Abdulquadri Jaiyeola of Nigeria scored 19 points in the match, with 13 attacks, three blocks, and one service ace.

Speaking after the match, Mohammed said they want to finish top of the group and stand a better chance of qualifying for the semi-finals.

He said, “This is a great result for the team; we want to secure all the available points in the group stage. I and the assistant coach, Suleiman Ajeigbe, took our time to study the Gambians when they played against hosts Tunisia on Monday. The Gambian side are good but we are better.

“The goal is to finish first in Group A. We will either meet Egypt or Cameroon. Any of the teams that come our way in the next round will be played with our last drop. The boys are ready to make Nigeria proud and get one of the available tickets to the 2023 FIVB World Championship.”

Nigeria will face Tunisia on Wednesday in their last group stage match.
