In response to the court decision requiring the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to halt its strike action, the federal government has made known its intentions to direct vice chancellors to reopen public universities.

Chris Ngige, the minister of labor and employment, revealed the idea on Wednesday.

On September 21, the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) issued a decision ordering the suspension of the ASUU strike and the reopening of all public universities while the teachers resume their duties following a seven-month closure of the educational facilities.

Ngige said vice chancellors will be instructed to reopen the universities based on the court decision on Wednesday at a meeting with members of the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics in his office.

In his words, “ASUU should also know that this is a step in the right direction. And all these things have been promised to them by the Minister of Education at their last meeting with him. For me, they should do the needful and get back to the classroom.
