Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) nominee for president, has stated that electing him in 2023 will open the door for the Igbo to lead Nigeria following his administration.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the former vice president made the submission on Tuesday in Enugu State while speaking to Southeast PDP stakeholders.

He claimed that he has always had faith in Igbo people, which is why he has three times selected an Igbo person as his running mate.

Atiku stated that he has three Igbo children while reasserting his good ties to the southeast.

“I am the stepping stone for Igbos to become President of Nigeria,” the PDP candidate declared.

“I’ve had close relationship with the Igbos and this influenced my choices of Senator Ben Obi and Mr. Peter Obi as my running mates in my two previous outings as presidential candidate. Again, I have chosen another great Igbo here (Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa) for the third time as my running mate.

“I have three Igbo children and I am saying this for the very first time in public. So, my relationship with Ndigbo did not start today,” Atiku added.

According to Atiku, the second Niger Bridge being built by President Muhammadu Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) administration is not a special favor for the Igbos and the entire southeast.

He asserted that the country as a whole, not just the region, needs the bridge and pledged that, if elected, he would give special projects targeted at the area first priority.

“The second Niger bridge in Onitsha is not a favour to the Southeast, rather it is or should be seen as a favour to Nigeria. This is because it is not only the people of the Southeast that use the bridge,” Atiku said.

The PDP candidate urged the leaders of the southeast to speak out against the Indigenous People of Biafra’s (IPOB) sit-at-home declaration, which he claimed had jeopardized the region’s economy.

If elected in 2023, Atiku promised to devote particular attention to addressing insecurity.
