Do Not Blame Ortom For Unpaid Salaries In Benue State – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, a presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), has stated that Samuel Ortom, the governor of Benue state, should not be held accountable for the state’s workers’ and pensioners’ unpaid wages.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, certain employees of the state government assert that they haven’t received pay in several months.

Speaking on the circumstance in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, Obi suggested that Ortom shouldn’t be held accountable for unpaid wages.

The LP candidate said that Ortom shouldn’t be blamed because he regularly spent millions of Naira each month to maintain the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps spread around the state.

Obi emphasized that Nigeria as a whole, not just the state, should be responsible for unpaid pay.

He said, “Benue State is spending several millions to keep all these IDP camps running. There is no way all these things won’t cost Benue State about half a billion Naira monthly to keep them going.

“And then you go round and say they are owing salaries, owing contractors or they are owing anybody, it shows that they have to do those first before thinking about any other thing; because these people have to live. And ordinary, these shouldn’t be problem of Benue State, it should be the problem of Nigeria.”
