The Federal High Court in Umuahia’s ruling ordering the federal government to send Nnamdi Kanu back to Kenya was applauded by the World Igbo Congress over the weekend on behalf of all Igbo living abroad.

Remember that in addition to ordering Kanu’s repayment, the court, presided over by Justice Evelyn Anyadike, also gave him a N500 million damage award. Barr Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s special attorney, filed the lawsuit.

JUST IN: Appeal Court Stops Execution Of Judgment Freeing Nnamdi Kanu

The Igbo Congress described the decision as “monumental” and “the zenith of judicial courage” in a statement released by its chairman, Prof. Anthony Ejiofor; secretary general, Sir Chris Ogara; and Mr. Basil Onwukwe, the PRO, even as Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami continues to appeal the freedom already granted to Nnamdi Kanu by the three-person panel of the Court of Appeal in Abuja led by Justice Hanatu.

According to the congress, “By this judgment in the Federal Court, Umuahia, we see that there is yet hope in the Nigerian judiciary, and we call on the Attorney General to redirect himself by toeing the line of judicial integrity, honour and rule of law to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu receives earned justice.

“Once again, and in keeping with our statement of October 18, 2022, World Igbo Congress calls on the AGF and the Federal Government to release Kanu now.”

Kanu was last seen being detained in Kenya before being extradited to Nigeria in a process his legal team referred to as extraordinary rendition.

On October 13, 2022, the Court of Appeal released Kanu, saying that his imprisonment in Kenya had violated international conventions to which Nigeria is a party.

However, Abubakar Malami, the attorney general of Nigeria, filed an appeal for a stay of execution, which the Court of Appeal in Abuja approved Wednesday. The Supreme Court is now deliberating the case.
