2023: Military Under Pressure To Compromise Elections – CDS, Irabor

The Nigerian military declared on Thursday that, despite ongoing pressure to compromise the 2023 elections, Nigerians may be certain that the military will remain impartial.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, made the announcement to journalists at the 61st State House Ministerial Briefing, which was hosted by the Presidential Communications Team at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

According to him, military personnel confront inducements, but the armed services would stay apolitical as it takes the necessary steps to assure compliance with the President’s mandate to maintain neutrality, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Personnel, according to Irabor, are being trained to be more professional, even as the rules of engagement have been formalized for dissemination before, during, and after elections.

The CDS also stated that since 2014, multiple military rescue operations and negotiations have resulted in the release of at least 300,000 persons from the hands of their kidnappers, and refugees who fled the North-East due to conflict have begun to return.

He stated that former insurgents who are now being taught would graduate in February of next year before being reintegrated into society. He also stated that the military is recruiting more personnel for all aspects of security.

Irabor stated that the goal is to increase the number of on-the-ground personnel to combat insurgency and banditry, as well as to reduce oil theft, which will eventually lead to increased crude oil production.
