Abia State Doctors Threaten Indefinite Strike Thursday

Concerned over the Abia State Government’s failure to pay salaries, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) announced an indefinite strike in the state on December 8.

This is stated in a statement released by the NMA’s Chairman, Dr. Abali Isaiah, and Secretary, Dr. Daniel Ekeleme, following a meeting on Wednesday in Aba, the state’s commercial nerve center.

The associated bemoaned that their colleagues at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) and the Health Management Board (HMB) were owed salary arrears ranging from 21 to 25 months and 13 months, respectively.

Noting that doctors face unimaginable hardship, the NMA accused the state government of failing to demonstrate a serious commitment to the course.

The following is the full communique published by the NMA in Abia State:

On Sunday, December 4, 2022, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Abia State Branch called an emergency general meeting at Prof Prosper Igboeli House (NMA Aba Zonal Secretariat).

Observations:

1.That doctors at ABSUTH and HMB are currently owing salary arrears ranging from 21 to 25 months and 13 months, respectively.

The 21-day deadline provided to ABSG to clear the aforementioned salary arrears is now in its 17th day.

ABSG has yet to demonstrate a meaningful commitment to the course.

That doctors affiliated with ABSUTH and HMB are today facing insurmountable difficulties.

Resolution

Following extensive consideration on the foregoing remarks, the NMA Abia State Congress decided as follows:

The NMA Abia State Branch strongly opposes the nonpayment of our doctors in absuth and HMB.

2.Our ultimatum to the ABSG is still in effect.

The Congress insisted on receiving 50% of what was owed as their minimum requirement.

LATEST: NMA Suspends On-going Strike

4.That failure to meet the above-mentioned demands on or before December 8, 2022, will cause ALL Doctors in Abia State’s federal, state, and private sectors to go on total and indefinite strike.

That the ABSG be held liable for any medical mishaps that occur during the period of industrial unrest.
