League of Queens International, a non-governmental organisation, said that it has started planting 2,000 economic trees in Akwa Ibom State’s public primary schools as part of attempts to lessen the consequences of climate change in the state.
Additionally, the organisation has stepped up its efforts to encourage recycling and efficient garbage disposal in the state.
The group’s coordinator, Idongesit Alexander, revealed this during a news conference on “Gender and Climate Change” on Wednesday in Uyo, the state capital, and stated that the goal was to plant the suggested amount of trees within a year.
However, Idongesit, who was represented by Idorenyin Bassey, demanded collaboration with the public and corporate sectors, as well as people and civil society organisations, in order to complete the task.
According to her, three Climate change Action Groups were inagurated on Wednesday to lead the tree planting campaigns, carry out advocacy for waste disposal as well as monitor actions of individuals, communities and government to ensure they comply to national and international climate change frameworks.
She said, “As follow-up to the project activities, League of Queens International has commenced planting of trees in primary school in Akwa Ibom state, the target is to plant 2000 Economic Trees in the next 12 months.

“In this assignment, we called on for partnership with government, private sector, individuals and civil society organization. The league is also undertaking campaigns to promote proper waste disposal and recycling.
“Today,7th December 2022, we are inaugurating three Climate change Action Groups in the state. The climate change Action Groups will lead the tree planting campaigns in their localities and also carry out the advocacy for waste disposal and waste recycling in the state.
“They will also monitor the actions of individuals, communities and government, particularly the local government to ensure they comply to national and international climate change frameworks.”
The coordinator who disclosed that the group had trained 30 young women on climate change manifestations since the commencement of the project in September this year, decried the impact of climate change which she noted had caused pollution and destruction of livelihood in the state.
