The late military dictator Sani Abacha will now be honored at the Olympic stadium, according to the Ebonyi State government.

The stadium’s renaming was accepted by the state executive council while it was still being built.

From 1993 to 1998, Abacha presided as Nigeria’s military ruler. After seizing control of the government by toppling Ernest Shonekan’s interim administration, he made a commitment to restore democracy to the nation. He outlawed all political activity, violently repressed criticism, and murdered some of his detractors. MKO Abiola, the 1993 presidential election winner, and Olusegun Obasanjo, a former military commander, were both imprisoned by him for treason. Among other things, Kudirat, one of Abiola’s wives, was murdered by Abacha’s killer squad.

Prof. Wole Soyinka, a Nobel laureate, was also accused of treason but was able to leave the country.
Along with eight other environmental campaigners, the author Ken Saro-Wiwa was imprisoned and killed by his regime for treason. As part of the group known as the Ogoni 9, Saro Wiwa and eight other activists from Nigeria’s Ogoni region protested against the Royal Dutch Shell oil company’s business practices and the environmental exploitation of their area by international oil firms.

The Centenary City Ring Road was also renamed in honor of Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The state government said the stadium and road were renamed in honor of former Senate President Anyim and Abacha for their serving the state credibly.

The state legislature also approved N111,250,000 for natives of the state to celebrate Christmas.

The development was disclosed in a statement on Saturday by Chooks Oko, the state’s special adviser on media and strategy.
