It will be challenging for one person to impose a presidential candidate on the people of Rivers State, according to Prince Uche Secondus, a former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.

According to him, the state’s residents have always supported the PDP and are too educated to be intimidated into supporting a new political party in the upcoming presidential election.

Secondus was responding to the announcement made on Thursday by the state governor, Nyesom Wike, that he will announce his choice for the presidency on February 25, 2023, in January. He had stated in November that he would soon notify the people of the state which presidential candidate to support while running for the PDP governorship.

Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate, and Iyorchia Ayu, the national chairman, have been at odds with Wike and some unhappy party members who established the Integrity Group.
They were adamant that they would only support the party in the presidential race if Ayu cedes office to a person from the south. Furthermore, they urged that in 2023, power should be given back to the South.
