Mifepristone, an abortion drug, may now be purchased at pharmacies in the US.
When an intrauterine pregnancy is ten weeks along (70 days or less have passed since the patient’s last menstruation began), mifepristone and misoprostol are administered together.
The medication was initially approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000, but patients could only buy it directly from a healthcare professional.

The FDA changed the terms of the drug’s distribution on its website on Tuesday, stating that it “may be supplied by licensed pharmacies or by or under the supervision of a certified prescriber.”
However, the new law still calls for a prescription.
The organization claimed that the choice was made following a review of the risk assessment and mitigation plan (REMS).
“The FDA determined that the available data and information support modification of the REMS to reduce burden on the health care delivery system and to ensure the benefits of the product outweigh the risks,” the agency said.
The ability to sell Mifepristone directly to clients who have a prescription from a licensed physician is now available to US pharmacies who request for certification to distribute the medication.

After the supreme court overturned the right to an abortion, some states banned or restricted access to the procedure, and the move is thought to be an effort by President Joe Biden’s administration to defend those rights.
It is possible that women in areas where abortion is prohibited will have to travel to other states in order to receive abortion drugs.
