2023: Nigerian Military Responds To ‘Atiku Meeting, Coup Plot’

The Nigerian Armed Forces has blasted allegations that some of its personnel met with a presidential candidate ahead of the 2023 election.

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, claimed that Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and key military officials met.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Acting Director Defence Information, denied the military was involved in a conspiracy to disrupt the general elections in a statement Saturday evening.

The “wicked and very malicious advertising stated that a so-called Thursday gathering hatched a Coup d’etat to create unlawful order,” according to the spokeswoman.

The Armed Forces voiced dismantled that “politically exposed persons can degrade themselves into joining agents of destabilisation and violence in presenting false assertions only to heighten tension in the polity”.

The director stressed that the military is committed to the Federal Republic’s constitution and will never be a part of any nefarious conspiracy against democracy.

The Defence Headquarters maintains that it will not engage in shenanigans and will stay apolitical and neutral in the current political process.

“Those who engage in fabricating and spreading unfounded misinformation will be invited by the appropriate law enforcement agencies to substantiate their claims.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will never be part of any ignoble plot to truncate our hard-earned democracy,” the statement added.
