Speak With One Voice On Naira Swap Crisis, Ex-Govs Tell 36 Govs

The Forum of Former Governors has urged the 36 state governors to band together and speak with one voice about the current situation caused by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s naira swap policy (CBN).

Remember that the governments of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara states had taken President Muhammadu Buhari and the Central Bank of Nigeria to the Supreme Court to suspend the February 10 deadline for exchanging old 200, 500, and 1000 naira notes.

In addition, the governments of Ondo and Kano launched a lawsuit against the Federal Government, seeking a court order to overturn the policy of withdrawing old notes from circulation.

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, on the other hand, criticized comments and attempts by All Progressives Congress (APC) governors opposing the currency swap policy.

However, in a statement issued on Thursday, the Forum of Former Governors urged the governors to reach an agreement on the naira policy and quit arguing among themselves.

The statement was signed by the Forum’s Patron and Chairman, former Governors Lucky Igbinedion of Edo State and Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, respectively.

The Forum stated that the present Naira crisis, as well as other difficulties such as insecurity, will pass as they were only a phase in the country’s life.

They also urged Nigeria’s political elite and other relevant stakeholders to band together and preach peace in order to ensure the country’s continuing corporate existence.

The statement read in part: “The past few months have been a trying time for our nation. Our country has been witnessing actions and inactions that call to question the unity, peace, and progress of our country. Challenges associated with the Naira swap and scarcity crisis, insecurity, have frayed nerves and stretched the fragile nature of our country.

“We call on the governors, in particular, to put aside political differences and speak in unison for the peace and tranquility of our country. The geopolitical and historical implications of an unstable Nigeria are enormous, and have far-reaching implications for the black race.”
