Ayo Adebanjo, the chairman of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere, stated on Saturday that the word “Emi Lokan” is an agreement between the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu and President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to Adebanjo, the name ‘Emi Lokan,’ which translates to ‘My Turn,’ does not imply that it is the Yoruba’s turn to assume control in 2023.

Tinubu coined the slogan when speaking to party members in Abeokuta, Ogun State, in June 2022, just before the APC presidential primary.

Adebanjo’s latest remark makes him the second Yoruba elder statesman to criticize the phrase, following former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

While addressing supporters of the Labour Party at the party’s presidential campaign event at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), the Afenifere leader stated that Tinubu’s claim is an agreement between him and Buhari.

He said, “The one who said ‘it is my turn’ is his agreement with Buhari.”

“Emilokan didn’t say it is the turn of the Yoruba. Emilokan’s agreement with Buhari was that when Buhari leaves office, he will take over. [But] were you there when he said that?,” he asked the crowd, to which they chorused, “No.”

Adebanjo remarked that his support for Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is more than just backing the former Anambra governor.

He said, “I said before that if Obi does not come in as the president, forget Nigeria.

“The northern elders now say I want to impose Obi on them. No! They want to impose a northerner on us, and we said no.”
