APC Reacts As PDP, LP, Others Call For Fresh Election, INEC Chairman Resignation

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council (APC PCC) has chastised three opposition parties for calling for the removal of Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Election Commission (INEC).

Earlier, news outlets claimed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC) had requested Yakubu to retire and demanded that the presidential poll be rerun.

The National Chairmen of the PDP, LP, and ADC, Iyorchia Ayu, Julius Abure, and Ralph Nwosu, conducted a press conference on Tuesday at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

In a counter-press conference on Tuesday, Festus Keyamo, the Chief Spokesperson of the APC PCC, said it is wrong for opposition parties to ask for a new election when the current electoral process has not been completed.

The Ministry of State for Labour and Employment stated that the Saturday presidential and National Assembly elections were credible.

Keyamo stated that only the electoral tribunal may intervene in the process, directing disgruntled parties to go to court if they had a case.

The APC PCC spokesman stated that their request violated the Electoral Act, stating that the results compiled by state returning officers could not be tampered with by the INEC chairman.

He said: “They actually called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene; to interfere with the process. First of all, those demands are not possible under the law.

“Their request was against the provision of the Electoral Act, saying the results collated by the state returning officers could not be tampered with by the INEC chairman.

“When they (the results) come to the national collation centre, the national chairman has no power under the law to review what all those returning officers have done.”
