Details Of Gbajabiamila’s Meeting With UK Envoy, Laing Revealed

The meeting between Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila and outgoing British High Commissioner to Nigeria Catriona Laing has been made public.

According to news sources, Gbajabiamila met with the UK envoy at his office at the National Assembly in Abuja on Tuesday, just days after Richard Hugh Montgomery was appointed as Laing’s replacement.

The Speaker stated during the meeting that the national parliament has a fantastic working relationship with Laing and has had robust engagements on some crucial bills.

He said Laing’s passion was clear in all of their meetings, and he hopes her successor will build on the UK-Nigeria connection.

Gbajabiamila also stated that the departed UK envoy and her many engagements will be missed by Nigeria and the National Assembly.

Laing stated in her speech that her working experience in Nigeria has been fantastic, and that she has liked working with the Speaker and his staff.

She said: “So, I’ve had some highs, many highs, a few lows, but overall, it’s been an absolutely wonderful experience. And it’s a very strong foundation and it’s been really a good working relationship with Mr Speaker and his team.

“We’ve worked together on a number of very important electoral bills, his own initiative, the center’s foundation (Gbajabiamila legislative mentorship programme) he’s set up to support young legislators and I was very privileged to support the launching of that so it’s been a great pleasure working with him.”
