A poster reading "Terrorism hurts all..." is placed on December 21, 2016 at a makeshift memorial near the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedaechtniskirche (Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church) in Berlin, close to the site where a truck crashed into a Christmas market two days before. Twelve people were killed and almost 50 wounded, 18 seriously, when the lorry tore through the crowd on December 19, 2016, smashing wooden stalls and crushing victims, in scenes reminiscent of July's deadly attack in the French Riviera city of Nice. / AFP PHOTO / CLEMENS BILAN

Nigeria was voted the eighth most terrorised country in the world in 2022, down from sixth in 2021.
Terrorist activity in the country has dropped to its lowest level since 2011, according to the 2023 Global Terrorism Index report.

Nigeria rated fourth in the world in terms of terror between 2017 and 2020, and second in 2016 and 2015.

Since 2009, the insurgency of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province has killed thousands of Nigerians in the northeast region, but the groups were more restricted in 2022.
According to the research, “deaths in Nigeria peaked in 2014 at 2,101 deaths before dropping in five of the next nine years.”
