Obiageli Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education, has dismissed Festus Keyamo’s request for the State Security Service to arrest Peter Obi and Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed for treason as “nonsense.”

Mr Keyamo, a junior Labour minister and spokesman for the All Progressives Congress presidential campaign, petitioned the SSS on Thursday to arrest Messrs Obi and Datti, accusing them of scheming to undermine Nigeria’s democracy.

His claim enraged the former minister, who responded in a series of tweets.

“I saw a ludicrous piece of nonsense by a Minister in the @NigeriaGov of @NGRPresident @MBuhari, stoking the embers of destabilisation of Nigeria by goading and inciting @OfficialDSSNG to arrest the @NgLabour Presidential Candidate and his VP,” Mrs Ezekwesili said in tweets.

Warning the secret police and President Muhammadu Buhari against yielding to Mr Keyamo’s “foolish” ideas, Mrs Ezekwesili said “let me tell @OfficialDSSNG @NigeriaGov @NGRPresident and the leaders of the ruling Party @OfficialAPCNg about a very wise saying of our neighbours, the Ghanaians: If no one advises you, advise yourself. A word is sufficient to prevent foolishness.”

Mr. Obi and Mr. Baba-Ahmed were the Labour Party’s presidential candidates in the recently finished election. They are suing to overturn the results of the elections, which elected Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress as president-elect.

Mr. Keyamo’s request for Mr. Obi’s arrest comes just two days after Mr. Obi filed a lawsuit with the presidential election tribunal, disputing Mr. Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 presidential election.

Mr Obi’s case before the tribunal, according to Labour Party spokesperson Yunusa Tanko, kicks off the legal battle to regain Mr Obi’s mandate from APC President-elect Bola Tinubu.

According to the petition, President-elect Tinubu is ineligible to be Nigeria’s President because of his involvement in a drug trafficking case in which he forfeited cash to the American authorities.

Mr Obi’s legal team submitted a petition on Tuesday challenging the president-credentials elect’s before the tribunal, citing the drug trafficking case involving Mr Tinubu.
