Wike Reacts Over Ayu’s Suspension From PDP On Anti-Party Activities

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has approved the ward-level suspension of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairperson Iyorchia Ayu.

According to reports, Ayu was suspended by the party executive at Igyorov ward of Gboko Local Government Area in Benue State on Sunday for alleged anti-party activities.

At a press conference on Sunday, Vangeryina Dooyum, the ward secretary, confirmed Ayu’s suspension on behalf of the ward chairman, Kashi Philip.

Dooyum stated in a statement signed by 12 of the 17 members of the ward executive that the decision to suspend the Ayu was made after the ward leadership assessed his behaviour following the recently concluded general elections.

He also announced that the executive approved a vote of no confidence in Ayu and suspended him as a party member immediately, with the suspension taking effect on March 24, 2023.

During an interview with Channels TV on Monday, Wike indicated that the national chairman’s suspension was long overdue and the appropriate thing to do.

He added that Ayu was suspended because members are upset since the party failed badly in the national elections on February 25 and March 18.

Wike claimed that the people rejected the opposition PDP because Ayu refused to resign as party chairman.

The Rivers governor offered to financially and otherwise support Ayu’s suspension, saying that the opposition party requires fresh leadership.

Wike went on to say that Ayu was ungrateful for suspending some of his political allies and, in particular, sending Benue state Governor Samuel Ortom to a disciplinary committee.

He said: “It is only in this country that someone who has lost woefully during the general elections still wants to occupy the position of Chairmanship in PDP.

“As a national chairman of the people, Ayu lost his ward, your local government; not only did he take a distant third, you(Ayu) also lost presidential and governorship elections.

“I am in support of Ayu’s suspension in Benue.

“If he left before the elections, they would have said his leaving was the reason PDP lost the election; thank God he presided over the colossal failure of the party during the general elections.

“We cannot have the party in the hands of persons without any political contribution to the party.”
