UPDATE: NNPP Blasts FG Over Treason Allegations Against Peter Obi

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has disagreed with the Federal Government on the treason charge filed against Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) in the recently ended election.

According to news reports, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, advised the LP flagbearer against encouraging Nigerians to violence over the presidential election outcome.

On Tuesday, in an interview with several foreign media organizations in Washington, D.C., Mohammed said it is improper for Obi to seek redress in court over the outcome of the presidential election while also inciting people to violence.

The minister called Obi’s running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmedcomments ,’s that President-elect Bola Tinubu should not be sworn in as president treasonous.

Major Agbo, NNPP spokesman, told Newsmen on Tuesday that Obi had the right to free expression and that, to the best of his knowledge, the LP candidate had not committed any justifiable violation.

Agbo stated that individuals should not be afraid to speak themselves at any moment in a democratic government, emphasizing that freedom of speech is still one of any citizen’s essential human rights.

He did, however, urge the federal government to charge Obi in court if they had enough evidence to back up the treason charge levied against him.

Agbo said, “We are in a democracy. Peter Obi has the right to say whatever he wants to say. Even if what he said is wrong, is that sufficient to call it treason and call for his arrest?”
