Interim Govt: Presidency Speaks On Buhari Not Handing Over On May 29

The presidency has proclaimed that President Muhammadu Buhari is already on his way out and that nothing can keep him in power past the constitutionally mandated May 29 deadline.

Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, said this on Friday evening while interacting with reporters at the State House mosque.

According to the presidential communications adviser, Buhari has no desire to change the constitution or form an interim national government in order to remain in office.

He did, however, explain that certain supporters have been encouraging Buhari to resign by changing the regulations or amending the constitution.

But, Shehu reaffirmed that President Buhari is prepared and totally committed to handing over power to the next administration by May 29, 2023, and that nothing will change that timetable.

“Nigerians can rest assured that from here, nothing will change. Before this time, persuaders would have filled up this place, begging the President to stay, amend the constitution, and change the rules.

“But given his own disposition, nobody would dare come into the Villa today and say, President Buhari, stay back, don’t hand over,” Shehu assured.

According to newsmen, Shehu came out against some calls for an Interim National Government to be formed instead of handing over to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who won Nigeria’s presidential election on February 25.
