Enugu: Peter Mbah Considering Likely Defection To Labour Party, PDP React

Before his inauguration on May 29, 2023, Peter Mbah, the incoming governor of Enugu State, may switch from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Labour Party (LP).

Whistler claims that rumors that Mbah intends to join the LP in order to have a stable government have alarmed the state’s ruling party.

The LP won 14 seats in the 24-member Assembly in the election held on March 18, 2023, while the PDP won 10.

According to sources on the platform, the governor-elect does not desire antagonism with the assembly.

According to the sources, who include close associates and national party executives, it is likely that he would join the LP given that it is anticipated that the party will elect the Assembly speaker.

Whistler stated that an insider had said that Mbah might leave the PDP even more easily because the Enugu State chapter had been cut off from the national headquarters as a result of the G-5.

According to the insider, “He could just cite confusion and crisis within the PDP as a result of the division following the emergence of the G-5.”

The G-5 insider, who is also a lawyer, claimed that Mbah might use the legal proceedings and the decision to suspend the G-5 governor’s associates as justification for his defection.

The discharge certificate that Mbah submitted to the INEC prior to the election is likewise the subject of a certificate scandal.

The incoming governor of Enugu had asserted that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had issued the certificate.

NYSC, however, denied the certificate saying, “We are pleased to inform you that the Certificate of National Service belonging to Mbah Peter Ndubuisi with Certificate Number: A808297 forwarded for verification was not issued by the NYSC.”

According to additional sources, he might join the LP to appease the party and save his position.

According to the sources, he may leave the PDP for the LP in order to put an end to the LP’s lawsuit at the tribunal challenging his election triumph.

However, Nana Ogbodo, the governor-elect’s spokesman, called the report unfounded and incorrect.

Ogbodo claims that those who have lost are the ones who have created the rumors that he would join the LP.

He emphasized that no governor in Nigeria has ever been known to rule over a state with a majority of opposition lawmakers.

Ogbodo said, “Peter Obi became a governor in Anambra state without any member of his party in the state assembly. It doesn’t follow.

“It is a farcical narrative of these professional mourners. Some of them are hired to mourn the loss of the labour party in Enugu.

“Labour’s presence is so flattened in the state that Peter Obi, having lost his presidential bid, the whole noise is simmering down and you want to tell me that he still has potency when PDP and its structure are strong.

“It is very laughable for anybody to conjecture that Mbah will decamp. There is no truth in it please.”

He argued that there would be no friction or instability as everyone knows his role.

Ogbodo added, “If indeed the governance in the state is not tailored towards development but if everybody knows his role and works according to the law, why should anybody be concerned about friction or instability?

“Why should there be friction? I don’t see any friction when everybody knows his remit and ambit within the law.

“This is not the first time … Peter Obi, for instance, governed Anambra State effectively without any member of his party being a member of the House of Assembly.

“There are still contentions. We have not even settled on how many seats they have. This is just a mere pronouncement by INEC. There are still people who have serious issues.”

The spokesman of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba when speaking on the speculation said, “Why should we talk about something that will never happen? It would never happen.

“There are more pressing issues like Aishatu Binani declaring herself the winner that we should be talking about. It’s condemnable.
