Charles Soludo, the governor of Anambra State, has threatened to withhold all wages from employees who use the Monday sit-at-home as a justification for skipping work.

Governor Soludo claims that certain employees in the state are using the sit-at-home day as a justification for skipping Mondays at the office.

The Governor subsequently issued a warning that individuals who don’t arrive at work in full should not anticipate receiving their entire compensation. He also said that the employees should be prepared to work on Saturdays if they don’t show up on Monday.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who started the Monday sit-at-home in the South-East in 2021 to demand the release of their leader Nnamdi Kanu, who had been imprisoned, had repeatedly claimed that the order had been discontinued, but the populace had continued to observe it out of fear of attack.

Speaking about the situation, Soludo urged the populace once more to disregard the Monday stay-at-home ban and resume regular activities.

He said, “Monday sit-at-home has become an excuse for workers to stop coming to work on Mondays. This cannot continue. You cannot be working for just four days a week and earn full salary.

“We must get back to work on Mondays. If we do not go to work, we must not get our full salary. We must be paid proportionally to the number of days we work. If we must continue staying away from work on Mondays, then we will start coming to work on Saturdays.

“You must do your work and we cannot be working for 70 per cent and earn 110 per cent. We will cut your salaries when you fail to come to work on Monday.”

Speaking further, Soludo disclosed that he is under considerable pressure to raise employee pay, but doing so would necessitate reducing the size of the staff.

Therefore, he urged the state’s labor leaders to take the proposal under consideration.

The governor claims that the state government has been operating on a N88 billion budget deficit for the past year. The 2023 budget was based on the state producing N4 billion in internal revenue per month, but it has only been producing N2 billion. While Anambra state was expected to receive N5 billion per month from the federal government, it actually receives less.
