After being imprisoned for 29 years on suspicion of rape, Patrick Brown was freed from prison on Monday, sparking a range of reactions in Louisiana, in the Southeast region of the United States of America.

News reporters discovered that the now 49-year-old man was wrongfully convicted in 1994 of a rape he did not commit and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Brown was accused of raping his stepdaughter, who was six years old at the time, but he never did it.

The sexual assault victim failed to testify during Brown’s trial and starting in 2002, The Guardian reported. She allegedly made numerous requests for the case to be reexamined while giving testimony that Brown was not the one who attacked her.

The case, however, was swept under the rugs and not investigated again until recent years.

In the recent rewind of the case, Orleans Parish District Attorney, Jason Williams, said, “It is incredibly disheartening to know that this woman was dismissed and ignored, no matter how inconvenient her truth, when all she wanted was the real offender to be held responsible.

“When someone is wrongfully convicted, not only is it an injustice for the person who has years of their life stolen, but it is an injustice for the victim and the people of New Orleans because the real perpetrator is left to harm others.”

Brown was released on Monday after Judge Calvin Johnson presided over a hearing during which the office petitioned the court to overturn Brown’s conviction.

Uncertainty remained around the accuser’s possible criminal prosecution for the past false accusations that put Brown in prison for close to three decades.
