The inauguration of Bola Tinubu as president on May 29 will not be prevented, according to Olisa Agbakoba, a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Recall that Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, was proclaimed the victor of the presidential election on February 25 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the contenders for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), respectively, disputed Tinubu’s designation as the winner.

However, several Nigerians, including Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Emeritus Archbishop of the Diocese of Abuja, have protested the May 29 inauguration until the results of the presidential election petitions are known.

In a statement released on Monday, Agbakoba predicted that Bola Tinubu would be sworn in as president on May 29 and encouraged Nigerians to uphold the law.

According to the former NBA president, there is no legal procedure to postpone the inauguration on May 29 while the electoral tribunal considers the applications.

Agbakoba said: “It is important to state that the inauguration of Mr Bola Tinubu on 29 May 2023 is bound to happen under our constitutional process.

“While the election tribunal deals with the petitions there is no constitutional process to delay the inauguration on 29 May. We need to obey the rule of constitutionalism.”
