UPDATE: Atiku Blasts US Secretary Of State For Calling Tinubu

Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate in the recently completed elections, expressed shock that Anthony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, chose to contact President-elect Bola Tinubu.

News organizations learned that Bliken called Tinubu on Tuesday after declaring that specific people would face visa restrictions if they interfered with the democratic process during the 2023 elections.

Blinken informed Tinubu that the Joe Biden administration is committed to fostering closer ties with Nigeria, according to a statement issued by the U.S. Department of State Spokesperson, Matthew Miller.

According to the US Secretary, the alliance between the US and Nigeria is based on common interests and solid inter-ethnic ties, and Tinubu’s administration should work to further enhance such ties.

The importance of inclusive leadership that reflects all Nigerians and reforms to assist Nigeria’s economic progress were topics of conversation between Bliken and Tinubu, according to Miller.

On Wednesday, Atiku responded via a statement posted on his Twitter account, claiming that Blinken’s call to Tinubu runs counter to the US government’s stated position on Nigeria’s election.

He said: “I am in disbelief that @SecBlinken called Tinubu, a contradiction to the publicly stated position of the US on Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election.

“This is inconceivable considering that America, as the bastion of democracy, is well briefed on the sham election of February 25.
