A Federal High Court recently refused invalidating the election of Dr. Alex Otti, the newly elected governor of Abia, who ran under the Labor Party (LP) banner.

The Kano LP candidates’ election in the general election of 2023, however, was declared invalid by the court.

This comes after Ibrahim Haruna-Ibrahim submitted a court application asking it to revoke the certificates of return issued to all LP candidates proclaimed winners in Kano and the other 35 states of the Federation, including the FCT, Abuja.

In response to the conflicting reactions sparked by the verdict, Justice Nasir-Yunusa made it clear that the Abia candidates who ran in the most recent general election were not parties to the litigation.

Nasir-Yunusa stated, “This court lacks jurisdiction to make an order for the issuance of a certificate of return.”

The Justice further noted that only the Kano State LP’s primary election was declared null and void, adding, “They are at liberty to seek redress in the appropriate division of the court.”

According to Newsmen, Otti, the LP candidate for governor of Abia State, won the March 2023 election.

Alex received 175,467 votes, defeating PDP candidate Okey Ahiwe, who received 88,529 votes.
