Seun Kuti, an afrobeat musician and the son of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, is being held at the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

Interestingly, his other prisoners have given him the title of “General Overseer” of his cell, complete with a Bible as a symbol of his new position.

There was some initial resistance from the prisoners to the coronation.

After being questioned, Kuti was taken to a cell after being arrested on May 13 for allegedly slapping a police officer, an allegation that led to a viral video and a warrant from Inspector-General of Police Alkali Baba.

The other prisoners’ initial responses were hostile, and they demanded that he be removed from the cell.

By offering the prisoners N25,000, which he arranged for his wife to bring, Kuti was able to broker a truce.

By doing so, he gained acceptance inside the cell and was given a seat.

Sources who talked with Newsmen claim that due to the uncomfortable situation, Kuti refused to consume any food that was offered, even meals that his wife brought.

Before he began eating, he went on a hunger strike for over two days.

In an unexpected turn of events, the prisoners gave Kuti the title of “General Overseer” of the cell and gave him a Bible.

According to the source, Kuti currently guides the prisoners’ prayer times as needed.

His older brother Femi, as well as other family members, friends, and his attorneys, visited Kuti.

Insisting that only his photograph and fingerprints were taken in accordance with procedure, the police have refuted claims made by Kuti’s defense attorney that he was publicly paraded.

They have requested that the defense refrain from participating in a “media trial” and permit the regular course of the legal proceedings.

To allow for additional investigation into Kuti’s case, the Chief Magistrate Court in Sabo, Yaba has authorized a four-day extension of his imprisonment.
