Fear As Supreme Court Delivers Judgement On Tinubu-Shettima’s Election Victory

In anticipation of today’s Supreme Court decision on the results of the 2023 presidential election, which saw Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu win, there is a tangible sense of tension and panic among party stakeholders and supporters.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Tinubu as the victor of the presidential election on February 25.

Opposition groups, however, have filed a lawsuit against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, claiming that Senator Kashim Shettima, the party’s vice presidential nominee, received two nominations.

Supreme Court Set To Rule On PDP’s Suit Seeking Tinubu, Shettima’s Disqualification

According to Newsmen, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate, have filed a lawsuit to have Tinubu and Shettima disqualified from the election due to the alleged double nomination.

The opposing party asserted that the action was against the electoral laws. The appeal was based on the appellant’s assertions that the appellate court erred in law when it denied its appeal and upheld the trial court’s ruling that the lawsuit was unfounded and without substance.

PDP claims that by designating Shettima as both the party’s vice presidential candidate and senatorial candidate for Borno Central, APC violated the law.

On Monday, May 29, 2023, Tinubu and Shettima will be sworn in as President and Vice President, respectively, barring any last-minute changes.

However, it’s believed that some concern among Nigerians has been caused by the expected verdict today. In spite of this, the ruling party has continued to make preparations for the inauguration ceremony on May 29.

Tinubu and Shettima’s victory can be deemed invalid if the Supreme Court rules in the PDP’s favor on the case that was filed.

In an interview with journalists before today’s Supreme Court decision, public affairs analyst Chuks Ibegbu stated there was no need to be alarmed by the court’s decision.

After the Supreme Court verdict, he warned Nigerians not to allow themselves to be manipulated in inciting mayhem.

“Well, the Supreme Court is the highest in the land. There should be no cause for alarm. Whatever decision they take is Supreme. We hope their decision will be the best in the interest of justice and Nigeria.
