The specifics of the discussion between the Federal Government and Organized Labor regarding the elimination of fuel subsidies have come to light.

The Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) leadership was reportedly summoned by President Bola Tinubu to a meeting in the Presidential Villa in Abuja, according to prior news reports.

The meeting, which started on Wednesday at around 4 p.m., ended without a resolution.

After spending several hours in negotiations, NLC President Joe Ajaero urged that the Federal Government reverse the fuel price in order to revert to the status quo before continuing talks with the NLC.

The status quo should restore before any official interaction with the NLC, according to Ajaero, who criticized the removal of subsidies, in order to protect the Nigerian labor and propose further options.

He claimed that the Federal Government had rejected the most recent announcement since it had never even discussed palliative measures for Nigerians.

The NLC President announced that a meeting with its members to discuss the next course of action will take place soon.

Alake spoke with reporters after the meeting and said it was active and interesting, but she gave no further details.

Alake expressed optimism that the discussions with the labor leaders would go forward and that, at its following adjourned meeting, both parties will arrive at a suitable resolution.

He said: “We have been deliberating on finding very amicable resolutions to the issue at hand —to the queues and all of that and the increase in pump price.

“We had a very robust engagement. We cross-fertilized ideas, ideas flew from all sides and there is one thing that is remarkable even from the labour side — and that is Nigeria. We are all looking at the peace, progress, and stability of Nigeria. That is what is paramount.

“Of course, the NNPCL GCEO, Mr Kyari, is here, we cannot go into details now because the talks are still ongoing.

“We cannot finish everything in one setting, so we have adjourned now, we are continuing the talks at a later date very shortly. But the point is that the talks are ongoing and it’s always better for all sides to keep talking with a view to arriving at a very amicable resolution that will be in the longer-term interest of all Nigerians. That is as much as we can say now.”
