10th NASS: Tinubu Meets Lawmakers-Elect In Aso Rock Over Leadership Decision

Due to today’s scheduled meeting between the president and the newly elected members, political intrigues in the 10th National Assembly may have increased.

Conflicts amongst candidates for the 10th Assembly’s presiding officer roles could have possibly caused the gathering.

Due to the urgency of the situation, the meeting that was originally scheduled for Monday was postponed for today, Sunday.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party, as well as other opposition groups, are likely to send representatives to the House of Representatives and senatorial elections.

The meeting is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at the State House in Abuja, according to the organizers.

It was learned that Tijanni Umar, the Permanent Secretary of the State House, signed the invitation to the meeting on behalf of Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President.

Recently, Tinubu appointed Gbajabiamila, the departing Speaker of the House of Representatives, as his chief of staff.

The National Assembly’s ninth session will end on June 11 and the 10th session will begin on June 13.

Between these times, it is anticipated that the MPs would pick a new leadership.

Therefore, it is unclear whether the departing senators and House members will take part in the meeting, as the invitation does not indicate such.

However, it’s rumored that this is one of the president’s strategies for getting the opposition MPs to endorse his picks for the two houses’ leadership.

The former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, and the incumbent senator from Kano North, Barau Jibrin, are reportedly receiving support from Tinubu for the offices of senate president and deputy senate president, respectively.
