The President Bola Tinubu-led administration is apparently being lobbied by senior military officials regarding the selection of a new Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, and Chief of Air Staff.

According to news sources, General Lucky Irabor is Nigeria’s current Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya is the current Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo is the current Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), and Air Marshal Oladayo Amao is the current Chief of Air Staff (CAS).

Depending on the course Tinubu chose from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), approximately 300 officers from the Army, Navy, and Airforce may be required to retire from their positions, according to Daily Sun.

In order to make room for their successors to move into their new houses, it was learned that the current service chiefs had prepared their notes for handing over and some have even begun packing up their official residence at Niger Barracks.

According to the reports, “the potential officers suitable for the jobs” consult with and influence politicians, contractors, members of the president’s family, and other senior government officials in order to further their goals.

According to sources who spoke to the Daily Sun, it was a given that the new Chief Of Army Staff would come from the South-West because no officer from that region had held the position since Lieutenant General Ipool Alani-Akinirade did it more than 40 years ago. After many years, the South West finally received the position of the Chief of Defence Staff, occupied by the immediate past CDS, General Gabriel Olonisakin.

Four Major Generals from the South West, including a General Officer Commanding (GOC), are already rumored to be candidates for the position of Chief of Army Staff. One of the four candidates would be chosen to serve as Chief of Army Staff.

As the president is determined to combat oil thieves and put an end to unlawful bunkering and other illegal maritime activities, it was also learned that the future Chief of Naval Staff may be from the South-South. Rear admirals from the North West are among the names that are circulating, though.

The South East is a possible region for the incoming Chief of Air Staff. This, it was learned, is because the only officer in his course qualified for that position is a pilot and from South East.

If the lobbying by some of the officers from that region of the country is any indication, the position of Chief of Defence Staff may also move to the South West.

According to authoritative military sources who spoke to Daily Sun, certain commanders from that region have presented their lobby to the royal fathers of their states and other notable figures.
