He gave his regular weekly general audience performance on Wednesday before getting ready for his hospital visit.

Pope Francis would have “a laparotomy and abdominal wall surgery, under general anesthesia,” according to Matteo Bruni. An abdominal cavity surgical cut is made during a laparotomy.

According to the Vatican, the Pope would require a few days in the hospital for a “normal post-operative course and full functional recovery.”

Pope Francis, who has been in charge of the 1.3 billion Catholics around the world for ten years, has struggled with health concerns recently.

The Pope had surgery at the same medical facility, Gemelli, the previous year to address a type of diverticulitis, an infection of pouches in the gut lining.
