The Labour Party (LP) has stated that supporters of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, also known as the Obidient Movement, are battling for the country’s democracy.

Yunusa Tanko, the Chief Spokesperson of the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), made this remark on Channels Television’s special coverage of Democracy Day on Monday.

The annual festival honors the country’s democracy in the aftermath of the annulled June 12, 1993 election, which saw Chief Moshood “MKO” Abiola emerge as the assumed winner under Gen. Ibrahim Babangida’s (rtd.) military government.

According to Tanko, the Labour Party and its Obidient Movement are fighting for Nigeria’s democracy in the same way that pro-democracy activists did during the military era.

He claimed that the twists and turns of the 2023 general election, in which the Obidient wave blew in so many locations, were a hint of what he was talking about.

Tanko said, citing the case of Bashir Tofa, who lost in front of his own polling unit in Kano, “that’s to tell you the level to which democracy was at its peak at that particular period of time.”

He said “All of these things about democracy, all of these people that you see behind you fought for democracy and today they’re being celebrated.

“For us in the Labour Party and the Obidient movement, we’re fighting for democracy right now and we know we believe that tomorrow, we’ll be celebrated because we’re fighting for what is just and right and the due process.”

Remember that the Labour Party is contesting the results of this year’s presidential election before the Abuja election petitions tribunal after finishing third in the February 25 presidential vote.

According to the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the party’s candidate, Peter Obi, finished third behind APC’s Bola Tinubu and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar.
