Professor Yakubu Mahmood, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is scheduled to appear before the Presidential Election Petition Court on Thursday, June 15.

He will testify in a petition brought by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar contesting Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s election as President.

Atiku’s legal team, lead by Chris Uche, has already subpoenaed Mahmood.

During a recent court hearing, Uche stated that Mahmood will testify about the disputed Presidential election’s conduct as well as offer certain significant papers supporting the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential candidate.

Uche, on the other hand, did not clarify what these documents might be.

During the hearing, Atiku’s team produced their first major witness, Dr Alex Adum Ter, a lawyer and former Benue State Attorney General.

Ter said that the presidential election was marred by anomalies and did not adhere to the Electoral Act 2022.

Ter, who worked as the PDP’s Situation Room National Coordinator during the February 25 presidential election, provided three video recordings as evidence.

The video, which included transmissions from Mahmood and INEC’s Commissioner in Charge of Voter Education, Mr Festus Okoye, assured Nigerians that presidential election results will be communicated online for legitimacy and transparency.

Despite Tinubu and the APC’s strong objections, Justice Tsammani acknowledged the video clips and other documents as evidence, which were subsequently played in open court.

Further hearing in the petition will resume on June 14.
