Presidential Tribunal: Peter Obi Presents Over 18,000 Polling Units Result Sheet

The Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate for 2023, Peter Obi, have given fresh evidence in court to support their lawsuit challenging President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 elections.

According to newsmen On Thursday, at the resumed hearing of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), Obi and his party presented the tribunal panel with 18,088 blurred polling unit result sheets, among other documents.

The documents were submitted by their attorney, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN).

During Thursday’s hearing, the petitioners also called their fourth witness, Eric Uwadiegwu Ofoedu, a Professor of Mathematics at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka.

A copy of a letter addressed by the LP to Prof.Ofoedu on February 20, 2023, engaging him to assist the party in analyzing data in relation to the February 25 presidential election, as well as the subpoena issued on him to appear in court and provide the relevant materials, were also tendered.

The respondents’ lawyers, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) for President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettma, and Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), all objected to the tendering of the majority of the documents, but promised to explain their reasons at the final written address stage.

They also voiced dissatisfaction with the fact that they were only supplied with Ofoedu’s written statement a few minutes before the court proceedings began, stating that they should have been served earlier to allow them to analyze the statement for the purpose of cross-examination.

However, counsel for all parties agreed that the witness should be permitted to testify in-chief and then return on Friday for the respondents to cross-examine him, which the court agreed to in a brief judgment.

The Presiding Justice, Justice Haruna Tsammani, ordered the witness to return on Friday at 9 a.m. for cross examination following the conclusion of his main testimony on Thursday.

Lumnie Edevbie, another subpoenaed witness who described himself as an official of Arise News (a private television channel), was also called as the petitioners’ fifth witness (PW5).

They submitted a flash drive with a video recording of INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu’s presentation at Chatham House in London via Edevbie.

The INEC Chairman spoke about his agency’s preparations for the recent general elections, among other things, in a video aired in open court.

He stated that INEC intended to implement technology such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the posting of polling unit results to the INEC results viewing page, which anybody may access.

Prof. Yakubu stated that the results to be uploaded to the INEC Results Viewing (IREV) portal were identical to the polling unit result sheets (EC8A) provided to party agents.

Patrick Ikwueto (SAN), another petitioners’ lawyer, said he planned to display another video on Friday afternoon, when hearings are set to continue.
