LATEST: ‘Twenty-Two APC Senators Set To Join PDP – To Take Senate President, Deputy Position

According to a reliable Senator from the Northwest who spoke with Newsmen, there is a potential shift on the horizon within Nigeria’s Senate.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is said to be arranging a defection of 22 senators to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

If true, this might give the PDP a majority in the Senate.

These APC senators are expected to join forces with colleagues who support Senator Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari.

Yari previously ran for Senate President but was defeated by Senator Godswill Akpabio.

According to the source, the group of 22 senators met multiple times in Abuja and London to finalize their plan to defect to the PDP.

The APC now enjoys a Senate majority of 59 out of 109 members.

The PDP has 36 seats, and the remaining seats are shared by other parties. However, the purported defection would increase the PDP’s Senate seats to 58 and reduce the APC’s to 37, making the PDP the Senate majority party.

According to the source, the defecting senators have agreed to hand up the Senate Presidentship, which is now held by Senator Akpabio, to one of their own when they join the PDP.

Senators from the party would serve as Majority Leader, Chief Whip, and Deputy Chief Whip.

On June 13, Akpabio received 63 votes against Yari’s 46 in the race for the 10th Senate President.

A group of senators is now planning to challenge the results in court, claiming manipulation of the supposed secret ballot.

According to the source, potential defectors from the country’s six geopolitical zones are waiting for the allocation of principal offices and committee chairmanship posts, as well as the outcomes of their court cases, before moving forward with their plans.
